Gurkhas Brasserie    [cast your vote]

Style: Nepalese; has a few of the obligatory Best ... Awards on the wall. "It was a humble beginning. Gurkhas Brasserie was one of the first Nepalese restaurants in Melbourne. When Gurkhas Brasserie first opened in 1995 at the famous Chapel Street in Melbourne, it had one main purpose: to serve an authentic taste of Himalayan kingdom of Nepal to Australian public..." There's more, including a quick promo video by Channel 31 none-the-less! Note that this is a mini-chain now, with sibling restaurants (sorry, bras) in Carlton (Lygon Street) ,Brunswick (Sydney Road), Richmond (Bridge Road) and also in the CBD (Flinders Street). Check their website for all the details, reviews, menus and photos.
Ambience: Fine, brick interior with religious documents hanging from the ceiling. They also have 'comfy cushions', if you want to get really down to earth...
Price: $25 per person. ( menu )
Details: B.Y.O. wine only. Near junction with High StreetFlinders Street.
Special Comments: The 'Kukhura ma Krim (Neplese chicken cream curry) is worth a go if you are after something mild. In fact, none of the dishes were over spicy, or the Kachilla Curry (meat balls). For the adventurous there's also no. 25 "Khasiko Masu", which is diced goat meat cooked in a traditional home style! The vegies may be interested in the Aloo Kopi, which they describe as "Cauliflower and potatoes cooked in Nepalese housewife style (quite palatable for a vegie dish).
