Sweet Basil Thai (revisited)    [cast your vote]

209 Commercial Road, South Yarra ( map )

Style: Sweet basil has a full Thai-kitchen-staff, headed up by chef Sangvorn Meelmulthong. At his side, with wonderful assistance, executive Chef Natakhran Mimulthong. Daily the traditional techniques of Thai cooking are challenged and fused together with fine Australian produce to result in a soulful dish that has an innovative touch. This is the essence & style of sweet Basil Modern Thai Cuisine.
Ambience: This is a suitably-sized venue; just big enough to put a table together for 10, but ideal if it is a quiet table for 2 that you are after. There is an interesting ceiling - you can check this out on their website - look for the 360º camera.
Price: $25. About averages prices with mains courses $15-22. ( menu )
Details: The restaurant is only a few steps (25m) away from Chapel Street, "close to the infamous Market, Xchange night clubs and the new "Circus" night club" (apparently). Therefore if arriving on four wheels the large carpark behind Safeway and Coles is ideal, or get a tram or train (3 minute walk up from Prahran station).
Sweet Basil is open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays. Dinner starts at 6pm til late. Lunch bookings for nine or more people by arrangement. Sweet Basil is fully licensed and BYO wine only. Bookings are advised. They now have a home delivery service, too.
Special Comments: We went back because it was good the first time and several of us had been since anyway. This time it was still just as good, so certainly comes recommended.
